Oklahoma City Travel Guide

The world is opening back up. Do you know what that means? We can go back to traveling and seeing the world. One of the biggest goals I have had for myself is to travel but it has been challenging for me to execute ever prior to the pandemic. Now that we have the opportunity to go back to traveling I am taking full advantage of it. If anyone asks me to go on a trip I am there.

Recently, I decided to go to Oklahoma. Unfortunately, I was not able to find anyone to go with me during the time frame that I wanted to visit, so guess what I did? I went by myself on my FIRST solo trip. I felt comfortable solo traveling to OKC because it’s not a huge city so I wouldn’t get lost and it was easily driveable.

Growing up, there are just those states that you don’t hear much about so you don’t really know what they have to offer. Oklahoma is one of those states for me. When I decided to go to Oklahoma, I Pinterested things to do in Oklahoma. I found a decent amount of things but I was concerned I would not have enough things to do to fill up my weekend.

I was pleasantly surprised that by the end of my trip I was exhausted. I am not sure if it was from all the activities or the excitement of solo traveling. Either way, OKC has more than enough things to do that will leave you with a complete itinerary of things to do. There were even a  few things that I was unable to check off my to-do list.

Here is my list of things to do in OKC. I hope you enjoy it.

1. Wheeler District

The Wheeler District is centered around the Ferris Wheel which formerly was located at the Santa Monica Pier. In 2008, this Ferris Wheel was purchased off of eBay and moved to its current location. Not only is this an ideal place to visit to ride the Ferris Wheel but it has a picturesque view. You can take a picture in front of the OKC letters with the Ferris Wheel serving as the backdrop.

After taking pictures, you can lay in the hammocks, play the available games, and try the occasional food trucks. After a few hours of driving, this would be the perfect place to relax and hang out by yourself or with others.

Note: If traveling by yourself it is important to know that you are not able to ride the Ferris Wheel as a single rider.

2. Eat Brunch at HunnyBunny Biscuit Co.

I am a lover of all things brunch. This was one of the brunch spots that I located and definitely recommend visiting. This place is really bright and airy with a lot of natural light which helps to start the morning off on a high note.

In regards to their food options they have so many that it is hard to choose. I had The Charleston and the Honey Chick. I definitely had to try two entries. I would have gotten more if I thought I could handle it. Out of both of them I enjoyed the Basic Chick more. The Charleston was not as seasoned as I would have liked.

It did not feel weird at all eating brunch by myself. I actually found myself having a decent conversation with the people at the next table.

3. Take Pictures at Plaza Walls

Anywhere I go I am scouting out the murals. This was no exception. In OKC, there is a collection of 30+ murals by local artists located in the Plaza District. The art is amazing and the perfect backdrop for any pictures you would like to take.

Free parking is slightly challenging to find. You may have to go around the block a few times. Despite this it is still worth it. When you go here you should also plan to go to brunch before or after at Aurora which is on the same street.

4. Brunch at Aurora

Okay, I only went to two brunch places while in OKC and this was definitely my favorite. My food was so amazing. I ordered Cinnamon Apple pancakes and no lie it was my best decision. I have no regrets. I would go back just for them. They also have some other meals that I would like to try: Pulled Pork hash and the Bistro burger.

You have the option to sit at the bar, inside at a table, or on the backyard patio. Something I noticed about this place is their is a wait so you may want to set a reservation or prepare for a little wait for a table.

5. Bricktown Water Taxi

This was an enjoyable experience. I think it was more so because of the random family I met and held a pretty good conversation with. This is a nice activity to add to your list because you get to get on a boat and ride around. Along the way you get to learn about the development of OKC and take in the scene and beautiful sculptures that depict history.

It doesn’t hurt that there are plenty of other things to do around Bricktown such as checking out the local restaurants, play putt putt, or go to the mini-arcade at one of the local bars.

6. Relax at Myriad Botanical Gardens

Bridge on walk to Myriad Botanical Garden

While in the Bricktown area, take the time to check out the Myriad Botanical Garden. It is within walking distance of the water taxi or you can take the bus. At the time I visited,  the inside conservatory was close but this was where I went to take a break after sitting on the boat in the sun and taking pictures of the pretty artwork under the bridges. I just took time to sit in the garden and enjoy the fresh air and garden.

7. Dinner at Blue Garten

This is where I went for dinner. It is an outdoor space that features various food trucks and they have a bar. When I visited, I tried a quesadilla from Mijos Tacquiera and it was so delicious.

Based on their calendar, that food truck is there pretty regularly. I also visited the bar and purchased the Strawberry Limeade Club Special. When I took the first sip of that drink I did not want to stop. I was so sad when I accidentally knocked it over. I was so tempted to buy myself another one.

Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum

This national memorial remembers the 1995 bombing that occurred. I never knew this occurred because this was a year before I was born. However, this memorial is a great way to get more education and understanding of how a community came together during a time of a great loss.
